Amelia Jean Tat, of Lynchburg, who has served as an assistant girls varsity soccer coach at Nelson County High School, was arrested in June. She was charged with one count of carnal knowledge of a minor in Lynchburg and faces three counts of carnal knowledge of a minor and one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship in Albemarle County. Lynchburg Senior Assistant Commonwealths Attorney Janell Johnson said prosecutors in Lynchburg and Albemarle County reached an agreement to drop the charge in Lynchburg. The charges will go forward in Albemarle County, Johnson said, which means Tat will not be prosecuted in Lynchburg and faces four felony counts overall in Albemarle County. Tat, who was 26 at the time of her arrest, was granted bond in both Lynchburg and Albemarle County in July. The Albemarle charges stem from an alleged incident that took place in 2015, when Tat was a teacher at Jack Jouett Middle School in Albemarle. Tat taught at Nelson County High School for the 2015-2016 school year, her first year there, but she has not returned to work at NCHS for the 2016-17 school year. Nelson school officials have said they likely would hold off on making a decision about Tats employment status until cases against her conclude. Tat is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 10:30 a.m. Jan.
